Getting to Know Hojicha
What exactly is Hojicha?
Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green tea. Unlike traditional green teas that are steamed, Hojicha is slow-roasted to create a warm, toasty aroma and a smooth, nutty flavor. It’s earthy, comforting, and remarkably smooth.
Is Hojicha low in caffeine?
Yes. The roasting process naturally lowers the caffeine content, making Hōri a gentle alternative to coffee or matcha. It’s a great choice for those who are caffeine-sensitive or mindful of iron absorption.
Can I drink it in the evening?
Absolutely. Because it’s so low in caffeine, Hōri is the perfect evening ritual. It’s designed to help you unwind and feel grounded without disturbing your sleep.
Hojicha vs. Matcha
| Feature | Matcha | Hōri Hojicha |
| Profile | Bright, vegetal, intense | Warm, toasty, nutty |
| Energy | High caffeine / Stimulating | Low caffeine / Calming |
| Vibe | Morning kickstart | All-day grounding ritual |
| Taste | Grassy & vibrant | Notes of cocoa & caramel |
Why haven’t I heard of Hojicha before?
In Japan, Hojicha is a beloved daily staple, but it has rarely been exported with the same focus as Matcha. We created Hōri to change that - and we think once you try it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
About Hōri
Where is Hōri sourced?
Our Hojicha is exclusively sourced from the historic Ōmi region in Shiga, Japan. We partner with a family-owned estate that specializes in artisanal roasting, using leaves grown in the unique microclimate surrounding Lake Biwa.
How do I prepare Hōri?
Making the perfect latte is simple:
Brew: Sift 1–2 tsp of Hōri powder into 40ml of hot water (75–80°C). For a stronger flavour, feel free to add a little more. For a naturally sweeter finish, we recommend whisking with room-temperature water.
Whisk: Using a bamboo whisk (chasen), whisk until a thin layer of foam forms on top.
Pour: Pour into a glass and add 120ml of milk or your favourite plant-based alternative. We love oat milk!
Enjoy: Sip hot or pour over ice — your Hōri hojicha latte is ready!
Hōri's tip: Add a dash of agave, vanilla, or caramel syrup for a hint of sweetness.
How should I store my Hōri?
To keep your tea fresh, keep your hojicha in its sealed bag, store the tin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, we recommend enjoying it within 12 months for the best aroma. If you prefer to transfer the powder directly into the tin, we recommend using it within 3 months for the best flavour.
Is this a limited batch?
Yes. To ensure the highest quality and freshness, our first release is produced in a very small, intentional batch.
How is the tea packaged inside the tin?
Each 80g serving of Hojicha arrives in a sealed, airtight inner bag within the tin. This ensures maximum freshness and prevents the powder from settling during transit.
For maximum freshness, we recommend keeping your hojicha in its sealed bag inside the tin. If you prefer to transfer the powder directly into the tin — which makes for a beautiful daily ritual — we recommend using it within 3 months for the best flavour.
